    Today, I was surprised to see someone bring a ruler with her and I just wonder if this kind of ruler makes you suffer a lot when you were a child.

    这样改一下语法就没什么问题了。但是还是太严肃了，没有调侃的意味在里面。我建议你使用下面这个句子。

    I was impressed by the ruler in your bag today. Is it the same one that your parents used to beat you when we were little？
    我今天被你书包里的尺子惊呆了。那是不是咱们小时候你爸妈常用来教育你的？
