滕王阁始建于唐代，后几经兴废，明代景泰年间(公元1450~1456年)，巡抚都御使韩雍重修，其规模为：三层，高27米，宽约14米。今天的滕王阁，连地下室共四层，高57.5米，占地达47000平方米。

滕王阁为历代封建士大夫们迎送和宴请宾客之处。明代开国皇帝朱元璋也曾设宴阁上，命诸大臣、文人赋诗填词，观看灯火。

滕王阁之所以享有巨大名声，很大程度上归功于一篇脍炙人口的散文《滕王阁序》。传说当时诗人王勃探亲路过南昌，正赶上阎都督重修滕王阁后，在阁上大宴宾客，王勃当场一气呵成，写下这篇千古名篇《秋日登洪府滕王阁饯别序》（即《滕王阁序》）。从此，序以阁而闻名，阁以序而著称。王勃作序后，唐代王绪写《滕王阁赋》，王仲舒写《滕王阁记》，史书称之为“三王记滕阁”佳话。文学家韩愈也撰文述“江南多临观之美，而滕王阁独为第一，有瑰丽绝特之称”，故有“西江第一楼”之誉。1300多年来，滕王阁历经兴废28次，可谓惯看春花秋月，饱经雨雪风霜。

重修后的滕王阁，高耸于南昌城西，赣江之滨。步入阁中，仿佛置身于一座以滕王阁为主题的艺术殿堂。在第一层正厅有一幅表现王勃创作《滕王阁序》的大型汉白玉浮雕《时来风送滕王阁》，巧妙地将滕王阁的动人传说与历史事实融为一体。第二层正厅是23.90×2.55米的大型工笔重彩壁画《人杰图》，绘有自秦至明的80位各领风骚的江西历代名人。这与第四层表现江西山川精华的《地灵图》，堪称双璧，令人叹为观止。第五层是凭栏骋目的最佳处。进入厅堂，迎面是苏东坡手书的千古名篇《滕王阁序》。每一层都有一个主题，亦都与阁有关。
