while是一定要接ing形式或者是延续性动词吗？

我知道when是可以接暂时性动词的，但是when没有比较的意味。
做语法题也做到过前后两个都不是延续性中间用while的，老师说是因为要表示“同时进行”的意味，when强调不出这个感觉，也觉得有理。
比如说这样一个句子，He was about to leave ( ) I walked into the room.
个人认为用while是可以的。但是答案给的是when。
请高人指点一下while到底是怎么个用法。看了别人说的也觉得不是很对。

用when 表示正要做什么事情就在这时发生了一件事

while的意思是“在……同时（at the same time that )”“在……期间(for as long as, during the time that）”。从while的本身词义来看，它只能表示一段时间，例如：
　1、He was watching TV while she was cooking.
　　她做饭时，他在看电视。（ 同时 进行）
　2、The south have rice while the north have bread(对比).
　3、 He asked me a question while I was speaking.
　　我在讲话时，他问了我一个问题。（在...期间发生）

这样记吧，while是两者同时发生的，所以只能接ing形式
举例子：“my mother was cooking delicious food while my father was watching TV"
我母亲在做饭的时候我父亲在看电视，有没有感觉到那种”正在同时进行“的感觉？
