Since 1990s, people are witnessing the computer and communications networks becoming one of the most important operations of many central services, which is from healthcare to finance and transportation. Thus, computer-mediated communications (CMC) gained popular.

It is so called Times of Internet, namely, Internet embedded in everywhere of our life. Especially, use of Internet in campus has increased dramatically in recent years. While the use of Internet in campus has primarily focused on academic investigates, faculty research and students’ communication. Thus, Internet has also become an important part of student life. Furthermore, Internet provides students a convenient platform for exchanging of information and knowledge. In a word, Internet provides a solution, new insights, and tools into knowledge management and sharing. So that, just to be successful in today’s competitive life, college students who live in college and university resident halls are one central segment of the population that can expect to find a high-speed connection where they live. Therefore, more and more students in campus proactively take part in different kinds of virtual communities on the Internet, especially in professional virtual communities for sharing knowledge with others, in order to enable them to seek, collect, or even contribute knowledge to improve their performance, or to absorb advanced insights, and to resolve problems on study or in daily life.

However, recently over-involvement with the Internet has occasionally been observed on campus. Once students get Internet addiction, they trap in problematic Internet use, and they often can’t control themselves well. In other words, they even spend their learning time on Internet just to meet their pleasure experience. And a recent research has indicated that excessive time spent on the Internet may have resulted in some students becoming socially isolated or performing poorly in their academics. So in this way, problematic Internet use make students lose their accustomed vigor or languish in the lassitude and their performance declined. For example, an exploratory study of Internet addiction of the Taiwan’s case has reported such phenomena that in one dormitory at their university, four roommates were infatuated with the Internet chatting with others, even chatting with their roommates on the Internet. Another interesting finding the researchers investigated was that some college students failed or barely managed to pass the examinations because they spent too much time on the Internet rather than on their studies. Some students keep connected to the Internet virtually the whole day — as long as they keep awake. Moreover, some students said that they could not do anything else, and felt serious depression and irritability once their network connections were in malfunction.

Above all, the phenomena around us has attracted our attention and led us to think or deal seriously with the role of Internet in campus.
