Miriam wolf wrote a very positive review of Tannen`s book-You`re wearing that?In San Francisco chronicle on January 22,2006.
In her opinion the writer is linguistics guru, her bestseller you just understand revolutionized communication between men and women. Now, in her new book she takes on what is potentially the most fraught and passionate connection of women’s lives: the mother-daughter relationship.
As for the main ideas from the book,Wolf reports that the principal tension in most relationships,is mothers and daughters struggle to find the right balance between closeness and independence.Apart from this, another problem is when they misunderstand the metamessage(implied meaning of the message) in their conversations, when the mothers give advice, the daughters take as criticism.
Wolf concludes that Tannen not only analyzes and decodes scores of conversations between mom and daughters, but also helps you to improve your own relationships. All of these are from her students, colleagues and her own experiences.
