表面上这首歌里有很多基督教的reference，比如说十字军东征，沙子做的城堡还有圣彼得（基督教里天堂的门卫），也有关于法国革命的reference，比如说革命群众还有断头台。但其实这首歌没有指明到底是哪个国王，而它想通过改朝换代来表达人世的沧桑和无奈。
每个落魄的人都曾经辉煌过，就像这个主人公扫大街的时候也会感叹自己曾经也是个国王 （Sweep the streets I used to own），然而一个人不会辉煌一辈子，这是命运，却有那么多人争先恐后的去为这一时的辉煌而不择手段，主人公也在歌里叹息，别看做国王貌似很风光，其实也不过就是命运手中的一个木偶，得到的也一样能很容易的失去（ Just a puppet on a lonely string. Oh who would ever want to be king?）在副歌里主人公说圣彼得不会去叫他的名字，也就是说他觉得他作孽太多，死后不会上天堂。
