There are ways to understanding children, and when the teachers have them and know how to use them, the job as a teacher can become much easier. Instead of working against a tired, even bored pupil, the teachers can be working with an enthusiastic, pupil with curiosity. Everyone has something that sparks their interest, something they like to talk about, something they are curious about; English can be applied to all of these. Young children like to play. Children like to make interesting friends. English can help them find these, so the teachers need to lead them into the English study environment. Feuerstein Theory of Mediation tells us that a teacher, as a mediator, has a great influence on children’s learning.
As the saying goes, “A good beginning is half done.” At the very beginning of the English class, lead-in activities are used to establish the context to attract the pupils’ attention, arouse their interest, and make them aware of the objective of the lesson, motivate them and establish the relationship between the old and the new knowledge. An experienced primary English teacher should be good at improving learning motivation of his or her pupils, that is to say, he or she should be good at using a variety of skills to arouse his or her pupils’ interest in English learning, because “the role of the teacher is important at all stages of the motivational process (Williams and Burden 133).” Although lead-in activities only occupy about five minutes at the beginning of the class, they are very important for pupils to like to study English. Lead-in activities should be applied by primary English teachers in the classroom teaching.
