1. The issue of robocalls has become so severe that many people now refuse to answer calls from unknown numbers. By next year, half of the calls we receive are expected to be scams.
2. We are finally recognizing the severity of the problem and supporting the development of various tools, apps, and strategies aimed at preventing scammers from getting through. However, it might be too little, too late, as scammers are likely to find even cleverer methods by the time these "solutions" become widely available.
3. In the near future, it's not just the numbers displayed on your screen that you should be suspicious of. You might also question whether the voice you're hearing is genuine.
4. This is due to the availability of advanced voice manipulation and automation technologies that anyone can soon use. At this year's I/O Conference, a company demonstrated a new voice technology capable of producing highly convincing human-sounding voices to interact with receptionists and book reservations without detection.
5. These technological advancements could potentially exacerbate our current issues with robocalls. The problem with robocalls is less about their volume and more about their precision. A decade of data breaches has led to scammers easily accessing personal information, such as your mother's name, and much more. With this knowledge, they can conduct targeted campaigns to defraud individuals. For instance, a scammer could pretend to call from a familiar number and use a voice identical to your bank teller's to trick you into revealing personal information.
6. Businesses are particularly at risk, as many transactions are still conducted over the phone, often relying on trust and established relationships. Voice manipulation technologies might gradually erode this trust.
7. We must address the security vulnerabilities of our telecom networks. Phone carriers and consumers must collaborate to identify and communicate what is genuine. This could involve creating a standardized method to verify the authenticity of videos and images or transitioning away from phone calls altogether, toward data-based communication using apps like FaceTime or WhatsApp, which can be linked to your identity.
8. Trustworthiness is difficult to achieve and easy to lose, and the challenge is expected to become even more difficult as we move forward.
