Linkin Park is a band from Los Angeles, California. They are often considered the most famous and most commercially successful exponents of the nu metal genre. Being such a wildly popular metal band, Linkin Park has come through a rather tough way.
The rapper Michael Kenji Shinoda was born in Agoura, California. He met the guitarist Brad Delson in 9th grade and started to write songs in his bedroom. Brad and the drummer Rob Bourdon used to play for numerous bands in high school. This started Mike on the way to become a singer. Mike met the DJ Joseph Hahn in an art school. Joe had been DJing for 5 years. Brad met the bassist Phoenix Farrell in college and the vocalist Chester Bennington was the last to join.
Before setting up Linkin Park, they were separately in different bands, Font Minor, Relative Degree, The Pricks, SuperXero and so on. But none of them had won such prize as LP even if Font Minor. In the band, two of them are half-Asian. DJ Joseph is a half-Korean and Rapper Mike is a half-Japanese. It makes them win the hearts of more Asians.
The band immersed itself in the writing process until the spring of 2000, when they inked with Warner Bros., before which they had been rejected 42 times. The end result is an album that is as well-crafted and melodic as it is confrontational, with a strong lyrical message. These lyrics, along with the diverse instrumentation in which they are embedded, result in a powerful musical statement: Linkin Park's debut album, Hybrid Theory. When they are waiting for the respond of the company, “One Step Closer” was so popular on the Internet, which made the Warner Bros. see the influence of the Internet.
Talking about the name of the band, Bennington was the first to suggest the use of Lincoln Park. He thought that since there are Lincoln Parks all over the country, the band would be recognized as a local band no matter where they went. He also liked the name because it had no meaning, allowing the music to describe itself. The group bore the name Lincoln Park for a few months. Knowing the power of the Internet they decided to register a domain name. But they found that "lincolnpark.com" was already taken. Because the band couldn't afford to purchase it, they simply changed the spelling from "Lincoln" to "Linkin" and purchased the domain name "linkinpark.com".
"The biggest misconception about us is that we're just a rock band," describes Linkin Park's guitarist Brad Delson. "We think our music is a cross-section of many genres. A hybrid of what the six of us has grown up on." Linkin Park's sound, a melting pot of heavy alternative rock, hip-hop, and electronic flourishes, is utterly their own. The style of their music is summarized as Alternative Metal（另类金属） Post-Grunge（后车库）Nu metal(new metal 新金属). Their music is not relatively fixed in one school.
The combination of Bennington’s rich, mammoth vocal style with Shinoda’s rapid-fire emceeing helps to define Linkin Park’s sound. "I think one of Chester and Mike’s goals is to be as integrated as possible,” offers Phoenix. “Although the styles we‘re mixing can be very different, we want the combination to feel natural--that is a big part of our band’s identity.” Unlike many some other rock singers, LP reflect the contemporary E time young’s aspirations in their lyrics, analyze why they feel at a loss, depressed or angry, and pull out their lowest level call. But in this "bad language serial " age, their lyrics are actually clean without blaspheming or snapping others. And it is really rare.
Then come to my favorite one---Chester. He is a guy with 10 tattooes who scared other competitors away to be the vocalist. When he is singing in his “black voice”, it makes you feel like hearing an irritated wild animal roar which is irritable like blasting explosive. He was once sexual abused. His parents’ divorced and so did he. He also took drugs. But things got better when he became one of LP. Immersed in music is a way of mind treatment.
His tattoos range from the fantastically beautiful blue-and-red flames that burn from his wrists to the bizarre, alien-like orifice tattooed on his back. Unfortunately, with these tattoos, Chester Bennington had virtually guaranteed that he was not going to get that banking job if this band thing did not work out. There was no way to cover up all those tats, even with a suit.
They have already had 6 albums, Hybrid Theory, reanimation, meteora, collision course, under attack and minutes to midnight. And there are also some EPs and concert DVDs. Some of the covers were drawn by Mike. One of their songs “Crawling” is the theme song of “Prison Break”. They have won numerous awards. For example, Linkin Park & Jay-Z won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for 'Numb/Encore' at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards. Linkin Park scored three Grammy in 2002--best new artist, best rock album (“Hybrid Theory”) and best hard rock performance (“Crawling”).
