It was getting late in the evening and I had just arrived at Nanjing Railway Station, returning from a weekend Frisbee tournament in Shanghai. I had forgotten my metro card so I went to buy a ticket to go to Xianlin. As I went to go down the escalator to the platform, a woman said something to me in Chinese. I smiled and turned back towards the escalator. She came up to my face and spoke to me again in Chinese. She had a friendly enough tone, but she was still scared me a little bit. I once again smiled and after she began walking away I once again started towards the escalator. This time she came up to me and grabbed me by the shirt and pulled me in the other direction. I was so shocked I didn’t resist. As she was dragging me across the station I looked at the signs and realized that the platforms were separate and that I had been trying to go down the wrong side. Upon my realization, I asked her in my broken Chinese “did you know that I was going to Xianlin” and she responded, “yes, I was behind you in line”. I was overcome with embarrassment, but also extremely grateful that someone went through so much trouble to make sure that a silly foreigner went to the right side of the train tracks.
We ended up riding most of the way back to Xianlin together and despite the fact that she spoke no English we tried our best to communicate. She had just gone strawberry picking and shared some with me. Additionally, she showed me pictures of her university and told me I should go when the flowers bloom. When she stood to get off I realized I had never asked her for her name or WeChat, but that’s ok with me. For me she is just a stranger, a genuinely good person who wants to help people.
