Poaching and selling endangered species is major problem in China. According to the Wildlife Alliance, China is the number-one destination in the world for illegal wildlife products. Chinese traditional medicine incorporates parts of rare animals, including rhinoceros horns, tiger claws and bones, and seahorses. Despite bans on such products, thousand-year-old traditions die hard, and a population of 1.3 billion people has made China a vacuum for the world’s wildlife. Even though illegal traffickers are fined 100,000 RMB (around $14,000) for each infraction, a black market for rare animal products continues to thrive, and species from other countries, especially from Southeast Asia, are pillaged to supply Chinese demand.
