这里的 explanation for why里，why可不可以改成which
用 for why ,,,, 和 for which 差别是什么？？？？？

不可以。

原句使用for why...，是用一个介词短语（介词for + 宾语从句why...）做后置定语，修饰前面的explanation.
如果改成for which，则只能理解为定语从句，这样which代指的是先行词explanation。但是将explanation代入定语从句的话，则句意不通。
因为此定语从句中for后面加的应该是表示原因的成分，而explanation不可能充当此句的原因。
即不能说成：there should be such a dramatic cessation of tree growth at the upper timberline (for ... explanation).

for why从句 中的 why从句是介词之后的宾语从句，for why从句 一起构成介宾短语，做后置定语修饰前面的explanation；
for which从句 中的 which从句一般是定语从句，修饰前面的先行词。
不过楼上给的例句for which one to select中的which one to select并不是定语从句，而只是一个“疑问词 + 不定式”结构，它相当于一个名词短语，做介词for的宾语。两者也构成一个介宾短语，也做answer的后置定语。

我给你举一个for which定语从句的例句：
There is no reason for which you can be late.
for which you can be late
= you can be late for which
= you can be late for..reason
其中，for which引导的就是一个定语从句，修饰前面的先行词reason.

explanation for why：对“为什么”的“解释”。
answer for which：对“哪个”的“答案”。
不应该说修饰吧，只是对应的关系。
This is the knife with which I use to cut the pen.是陈述方式，更直接的方式是：I used this knife to cut the pen.如果是类似前面的方式，是He have no idea on with which knife he just cut the pen.
语法都忘光了，重要的还是语感吧，我只能这么举例了O(∩_∩)O~
