英语在语言学上原为一种语言,但现在却因各国历史、政治、地理等因素的不同,大致说来有联合王国(The United Kingdom即英语)、英属联邦的澳洲、纽西兰等,以及南非共和国(1961年脱离英属联邦)等国使用的「英语」(或称英式英语),和美国使用的「美语」(或称美式英语)两种。在会话、书写、发音等方面都有很大的差别。而不论是英语或美语,即使在本国的同一个地区,也因为使用人的教育程度、社会地位、职业,或使用的场合、环境等种种的不同,而在发音、句型、文法、会话、书写等方面都有差异。例如,美国或英国的大学教授在官学术性论文时,使用「正式英语」(Formal English),在学术会议上向专家们发表论文时,也是用正式英语或一般英语(General English)。但假如把用生硬英语写的稿子照本宣科地念出来,则太文言,容易被批评为像在念书一样(He talks like a book)。同一个教授在家长会或其它的聚会中,向一般的听众演讲,或在各种社交场合中的谈话,主要是用General English,有时也会用一些亲切通俗的(familiar)或口语的(colloquial)语调。回到家则用非正式的(Informal English)或随意的(casual)英语和妻子交谈。虽然像这样依情况而有多种不同的英语出现,却一定都是标准英语(Standard English)。相反的,还有教育程度差的家庭中的小孩在街上交谈用的「非标准英语」(Nonstandard English)或俚语等粗俗的用语。
以下为英语种类明细表,选自较具代表性且简单明暸的Perrin, Ebbitt的图表。要注意的是这个表的分类,并没有非常明确的划分,还是有互相重复的部分。

STANDARD ENGLISH(标准英语)
1.INFORMAL ENGLISH(非正式英语)
·More often spoken than written(谈话比书写用得多)
·The speaking and writing of educated people in informal situations(有教养的人在非正式场合中的谈话、书写)
Typical uses: casual conversation; letters between people who know each other well, diaries, personal writing; fiction and nonfiction that simulates ordinary speech (典型用例:非正式谈话,新近者间的书信、日记、私人文件、类似日常会话的小说、散文)
2.GENERAL ENGLISH(一般英语)
·Both spoken and written(谈话、书写时都用)
·The speaking and writing of educated people in most situations(受过教育者常用的谈话、书写用语)
Typical uses: conversation; talks to general audiences; most correspondence, most college papers, and most newspapers, magazines, and books (典型用例:会话、对一般听众的演说、大部分的书信、大部分大学中的报告、大部分的报纸、杂志、书)
3.FORMAL ENGLISH(正式英语)
·More often written than spoken(书写比谈话用得多)
·The speaking and writing of the educated for largely intellectual audiences in formal situations (专家、学者在正式场合中,对知识份子的演讲和写作)
Typical uses: ceremonial addresses; lectures to professional audiences; certain types of correspondence; some academic writing, such as dissertations and some term papers; scientific reports; articles and books addressed to scholars and cognoscenti(典型用例:典礼上的演说;对专业人员的演讲;某种特定书信;学术上的著作如论文、学期报告、科学报告;写给学者、鉴定家的书和文章)
NONSTANDARD ENGLISH(非标准英语)
·Chiefly spoken(主要为谈话)
·The everyday language of people not much influenced by school instruction (受较少学校教育者的日常用语)
Typical uses: conversation at home, with friends, on the job (典型用例:家庭、朋友间、工作场合上的谈话)
