The Legal 500, a renowned UK-based legal rating agency, has recently released its 2023 rankings for law firms in the Chinese legal market within the Asia Pacific region. This is the first time The Legal 500 has disclosed a standalone list for mainland China before its comprehensive guide. The ranking is based on extensive data, including client feedback, firm submissions, interviews with in-house counsel, and the research team's in-depth analysis of the market.
The ranking system divides firms into two categories: foreign and domestic, and covers 20 shared practice areas such as antitrust and competition law, banking and finance, corporate and M&A, data protection, arbitration, litigation, fintech, insurance, intellectual property (divided into litigation and non-litigation), private equity, employment, life sciences, healthcare, real estate, and more. Domestically unique sectors include capital markets, private wealth, and WTO/international trade. 'Firms to watch' highlights emerging practices in specific fields.
The evaluation also includes rankings for seven major Chinese regions, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Chengdu, among others. Domestic firms are ranked in Tier 1 to Tier 6, with a 'firms to watch' category for promising firms.
In 2023, Zhong Lun Law Firm and King & Wood Mallesons secured the top spots, maintaining their lead across all 24 categories. Global Law Office followed closely, with some exceptions. Fangda Partners and JunHe LLP also showed strong performances, though with some exclusions in specific areas.
While the top firms maintained their edge, others like Han坤、大成、通力、天元、德恒, and安杰世泽律师事务所在多个领域表现出色. Attention is also drawn to boutique firms excelling in niche sectors like shipping, project & energy, and real estate.
The regional rankings showcased a more diverse landscape, with local firms gaining recognition alongside established names. This comprehensive list, from The Legal 500, offers valuable insights into the current state of the Chinese legal market and firms' competitiveness, guiding both professionals and aspiring law students in making informed career decisions.
