Ken and Mike Ken: I've started to learn grammar and vocabulary. But I still cannot figure out the correct usage of it. Learning English is the most difficult thing I have ever had. Mike: Is it? For me, learning English is simple although it is complicated. Ken: I cant make head or tail of what you are talking about. Mike: Haha...you're confused now. Why would I say so? Hmm, because all languages use the same tenses including present, past and future. It seems easy. Ken: Easy? I remember that there are many types of tenses. Am I right? Mike: Yes, you're right. Tenses include present simple, present continuous, past simple, past continuous, present perfect, past perfect, future tense and so on, but they are all catogorized in 3 main tenses -present, past and future. Ken: That's the reason why you are saying English is simple but complicated. I agree with you. I used to direct translate Chinese words to English. However, my tuition teacher Ms. Lee told me that the expression of these tenses cannot be always translated directly from Chinese to English. Mike: Yes, it's true. Besides, the same word has different meaning and cannot be simply used. For example, lend and borrow. These two confusing words mean the same but they have different usages.“I can lend you my book” but “I would like to borrow your book”.I’ve found it quite interesting in learning English. Ken: Oh my god! Mike, you makes me feel headache. What shall I do to improve my English? Mike: In my opinion, learning English should be started from grammar and vocabulary which are the main components in a sentence. Therefore, we shall firstly concentrate in learning grammar and vocabulary. Ken: Thanks for your advice. I shall learn from you. Mike: You're welcome.
